Join our 3 -day Lake Bunyonyi canoe trek, a short Uganda tour to a magnificent Lake Bunyonyi also popularly referred to as “a place of many little birds.” At Lake Bunyonyi, you will engage in a remarkable canoe trek to one of the islands while keeping an eye on different interesting birds.
Lake Bunyonyi is a scenic water lake found in Kabale, South-western Uganda also one of the Africa’s deepest Lakes with depth range of 44m and 900m. Unlike other Lakes, Lake Bunyonyi is one of the very few water Lakes that is free from Bilharzia making it a perfect place for swimming and canoe ride/trek.
Lying on elevation of about 1962m, Lake Bunyonyi has its width measuring 7kms and has a length of 25kms. Over 29 charming islands are all dotted allover Lake Bunyonyi and it is accessible about 7 hours’ drive from Kampala.

Day 1: Travel to Lake Bunyonyi & cultural walk
A heavy breakfast early morning, after transfer to Lake Bunyonyi in Southwestern Uganda. For 3-4 hours’ drive from Kigali, cross through Katuna border to Lake Bunyonyi for an incredible canoe experience, cultural walk and relaxation.
Arrive at Lake Bunyonyi early for relaxation and lunch, then in the afternoon, you will take a cultural walk in the nearby local community to interact with the Batwa or Bakiga people. After a cultural walk, return to your comfortable lodge that was pre-booked at Lake Bunyonyi.

Day 2: Canoe trek & Batwa Experience
A full day exploration at Lake Bunyonyi includes canoe trek and Batwa experience. In the morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast and after, take a canoe ride to visit one of the 29 charming islands on Lake Bunyonyi.
The preferred island to visit today on canoe trek will be the Punishment Island (Akampeine Island). This is a historical island on Lake Bunyonyi where the Bakiga people used to leave pregnant unmarried girls to die while trying to swim to the main land or die of hunger.
Other important islands to visit include Bwama and Njuyeera, beautiful islands where Dr. Leonard Sharp missionary founded a leper colony. Retreat from your canoe trek for relaxation and later, visit the Batwa pygmies in their local community adjacent to Lake Bunyonyi.
Batwa experience is an interactive cultural visit with local residents -the Batwa pygmies also best known as the original people of the forest. It is a fully packed cultural experience of the Batwa forest life, their hunting and gathering techniques plus great entertainment.

Day 3: Lake Bunyonyi sights and sounds
After breakfast, set off for early guided nature walk around Lake Bunyonyi. Explore the nearby terraced farmlands while enjoying the great sights and sounds of bird species. A total of about 200 bird species resides in and around Lake Bunyonyi including the grey crowned cranes, slender-billed baglafetch, weaver birds, herons, levillant cuckoos and more. Later, exit Lake Bunyonyi for Kigali for relaxation at the hotel or departure back home.
